Origin: Originally known as Brentwood Parish, a parish of Exeter. This and several other towns were separated from their parent communities due to overpopulation. The name was taken from Brentwood, England, a suburb of London containing the king's forest, the burning of which gave it the name "Burnt Wood."

Population Trends: Brentwood has grown above the statewide average rate over fifty years. The population grew by at least twenty percent over each decade—ranging from a 23 percent increase between 1990-2000 to a 37 percent increase between both 1970-1980 and 1980-1990. Brentwood's 1950 population of 819 residents grew to 3,197 by 2000, a total increase of 2,378 residents. The 2004 Census estimate for Brentwood was 3,686 residents, which ranked 99th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
