Incorporated: 1760
Origin: One of several parishes of Kingston, first settled in 1694. It was chartered in 1760 as Hawke, in honor of Admiral Sir Edward Hawke. Never a popular name, the town was renamed in 1836 in honor of early settlers. There were at least three Daniels among them, which probably prompted the selection of the name Danville.

Population Trends: Danville' population grew well above the statewide average over each decade, going from 508 in 1950 to 4,023 residents in 2000. The town grew nearly eight times larger, increasing by a total of 3,515 residents. Decennial growth rates ranged from a 19 percent increase between 1950-1960 to a 92 percent increase between 1980-1990, the fourth highest increase in that time frame. The 2004 Census estimate for Danville was 4,327 residents, which ranked 84th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
