Origin: Exeter was one of the four original towns established in New Hampshire. It was first known as Squamscott, and was given the name Exeter by the settlement's managers, the "Exeter Combination," a group of English colonizers. The river location of the town made it a shipbuilding center and West Indies trading port. Exeter is home to the Phillips Exeter Academy, endowed by Colonel John Phillips in 1781, and the American Independence Museum.

Population Trends: Exeter has grown at or above the statewide average rate over each of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from a 13 percent increase between both 1980-1990 and 1990-2000 to a 28 percent increase between 1950-1960. Exeter's population increased by a total of 8,394 residents, going from 5,664 in 1950 to 14,058 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Exeter was 14,709 residents, which ranked 17th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
