Origin: One of the earliest settlements in the state, Greenland was a parish of Portsmouth originating in 1638. It was probably named for Henry Greenland, a town officer. Residents requested and were granted a separate town in 1704. In that same period, Leonard Weeks constructed a substantial brick house, thought to be the oldest brick house in New Hampshire still standing.

Population Trends: Population growth in Greenland was well above the statewide average rate over each of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from a 16 percent increase between 1990-2000 to a 66 percent increase between 1950-1960. Over fifty years, Greenland's population increased by 2,489 residents, going from 719 in 1950 to 3,208 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Greenland was 3,390 residents, which ranked 103rd among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
