Origin: Settled in 1631, this area, called Winnicutt by the Indians, was known as Squamscott Patent or Point of Rocks because of its location between the Great Bay and the Squamscott River. The sixth town to be incorporated in New Hampshire, the town was named for a friend of Governor Samuel Shute of Massachusetts, Wriothesley Russell, Baron Howland of Streatham.

Population Trends: Stratham's population grew well above the statewide average rate, and had the tenth highest percent increase over fifty years. Decennial growth rates ranged from a 28 percent increase between 1990-2000 to a 98 percent increase between 1980-1990. Overall, Stratham's population grew by a total of 5,596 residents, going from 759 in 1950 to 6,355 in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Stratham was 6,892 residents, which ranked 45th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
